  17. <p>Israel shuts itself off from the occupied territories
  18. </p>
  19. <p>     Jews and Arabs are having such a tough time living together
  20. that the Israeli government has decided to keep them apart as
  21. much as possible. Having already closed off the Gaza Strip in
  22. response to a worsening spiral of attacks and counterattacks,
  23. authorities have forbidden Palestinians in the West Bank to
  24. enter Israel. The twin moves kept more than 100,000
  25. Palestinians from reaching their jobs in Israel, at an estimated
  26. cost in lost earnings of $2.6 million daily.

  28. <p>     The indefinite closure order was meant to prevent would-be
  29. Arab assailants from reaching their victims in Israel. But it
  30. was also aimed at protecting Palestinian workers from Jewish
  31. vigilantes, who have grown increasingly active in taking the law
  32. into their hands.
